Why buy a used Lexus RX?

Engines and transmissions

The Lexus RX is well known for its efficient self-charging hybrid-petrol engines, combined with a standard-fit automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • 350h uses a 2.5-litre hybrid configuration (same as the Toyota RAV4) with 246bhp and a 0-60mph time of 7.6 seconds.
  • 450h+ increases the power to 304bhp because of the 3.5-litre V6 that results in a 0-60mph time of 6.3 seconds, providing more than 40 miles of electric-only driving per charge.
  • 500h includes a turbocharger and a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine to make 365bhp and reduce the 0-60mph time to 6 seconds.
  • The 200t in the fourth generation was a pure petrol powertrain that generated 234bhp.

Practicality

The cabin of the Lexus RX is spacious and accommodating, making it a great option for families who also want premium features and materials.

Interior space
  • Two configurations are available – either a two-row five-seater or the RX L three-row seven-seater.
  • Headroom is adequate for adults in the rear outer seats (two-row models).
  • Large rear door openings give quick access to ISOFIX points for child seats.
Boot space
  • 461-litre boot is smaller because priority is given to seating comfort.
  • Electrically folding rear seats can create a larger boot.
  • Sliding cargo in the boot is seamless with the smooth floor after the seats are down.

Safety

  • All Euro NCAP ratings are encouraging, including the five-star overall score.
  • Adult occupant and safety assist are 90% or more, and the child occupant and vulnerable road users are over 85%.
  • Standard safety kit includes pre-collision warning, road sign assist, sway warning, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high beams and lane assist.

Technology

  • Large 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen dominates the cabin.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto provide more connectivity options.
  • Wireless charging pad further reduces the need for cables and cords.

Generations

As one of the first upmarket SUVs to hit the roads, Lexus released the RX in 1998, and it quickly turned into a bestselling model for the brand. Lexus realised the potential in SUV sales and followed suit by adding more models later, such as the NX and UX. Having recently entered into the fifth generation, the RX continues to be updated and refined, allowing it to remain a popular option. Lexus continues to fill the cabin with more comfortable materials and high-tech equipment that makes the RX a leader in its segment.

Fifth Generation (2022-present)

With the release of the fifth-generation RX, Lexus updated the styling and created a more refined interior. The shape remained the same as the previous generation, but it now had a longer wheelbase, an extended bonnet and a lowered roofline with a coupé-like design. The headlights were changed to be more horizontal and they now had triple LED bulbs.

The platform was designed with hybrid technology in mind, ensuring that the RX lineup had improved fuel efficiency. Also, great improvements were made in terms of safety, with more high-tech equipment added, along with a larger infotainment system for a better driving experience.

Fourth Generation (2016-2022)

The most significant change for the fourth generation was the new transmission that created a more controlled drive. The interior was also redesigned with a brand-new dashboard that was geared towards the driver and a larger head-up display. The Lexus Safety System+ programme was updated to add lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control and other high-tech features.

In 2019, Lexus released an update to give the front end a more aggressive appearance. Triple-beam headlights became optional, and there were now interior configurations that provided two or three rows.

Third Generation (2008-2016)

Because the styling of the RX was already popular with enthusiasts, Lexus didn't change much about its appearance for the third generation. Instead, the focus remained on the engine options, making them more refined, and the interior technology so that the SUV could be ahead of its competition. Even the base models from this time had 10-way electrically adjustable seats, heated side mirrors and keyless start.

In 2012, a refresh was released with a small facelift. A new grille was added along with L-shaped daytime running lights. Inside the cabin, the Remote Touch Interface was updated for better usability and a new steering wheel style complemented the interior.

Used Lexus RX information

Used Lexus RX FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Lexus RX?

Diesel powertrains were never offered and the majority of petrol models had some form of hybrid technology included. The 450h is the mid-range option and it tends to be the most popular because it offers better value with increased output.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Lexus offers several model variants, such as Premium, F-Sport and Takumi. The F-Sport has been among the most popular because of its unique exterior features and added safety equipment.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Models are available with a panoramic sunroof for a brighter cabin experience, but it does cut down on the rear seat headroom slightly. There's also an adaptive variable suspension that smooths out the road's imperfections for a more comfortable drive.

Is the Lexus RX a good family car?

Yes, the Lexus RX has been offered in two- and three-row configurations, making it easy to carry families of all sizes. The interior is extremely comfortable and Lexus has done a good job of keeping the technology relevant and updated.

Are all Lexus RX models hybrid?

Most models of the Lexus RX - and certainly all recent versions - have been built with self-charging hybrid technology as standard. This is part of the reason why it has been so highly desired among used car shoppers. Newer plug-in models can travel more than 40 miles on electric only.

Are all Lexus RX models automatic?

All Lexus RX models were built with an automatic transmission as standard. They were never offered as a manual.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Because Lexus wanted the RX to be capable and desirable, all models were built with standard four-wheel drive. With the power being transferred to all four wheels, there's more on-road traction and control.
