If you're in the market for a hybrid car that's reliable and spacious, then a used Toyota Prius is a great choice. The Prius lineup has high-tech features, a spacious boot and advanced safety equipment. With a hybrid-only approach to its powertrain options and great fuel economy guaranteed, there is a used Prius that fits most people's budgets and lifestyles.
Starting with the 2024 model year, the only powertrain option is a plug-in hybrid. A variety of hybrid powertrains from older models are available.

Interior spaceThe Prius was first unveiled in 1995 and was available in the UK in 2000. Having just entered its fifth generation in the UK, Toyota continues to upgrade the style and function of the Prius, in particular its aerodynamic shape, to meet everyday driving demands.
In other parts of the world, the Prius was updated for a new generation back in 2022. However, due to an increased interest in hybrid SUV models, the UK variant was only revealed at the start of 2024. Increased sales of the C-HR halted the production of new Prius models in the UK. With the fourth generation, Toyota lowered the centre of gravity of the Prius thanks to a new mechanical platform. Additionally, a double-wishbone rear suspension increased the handling, stability and ride quality. With the new underpinnings, the interior space was increased and comfort was improved.
The powertrain was smaller and lighter, but this didn't affect the car's capability. CO2 emissions dropped and efficiency was boosted, making the Prius more popular than ever.
The Hybrid Synergy Drive system was completely updated during this generation to improve efficiency and help with the car's environmental impact. The final product was lighter and smaller than before, while the engine size grew from 1.5 to 1.8 litres.
Toyota kept the basic styling of the second generation the same, but modernised it slightly. Interior trim pieces were constructed from recycled plastic that came from plant matter, showing that these materials could have a purpose in the automotive sector. During this generation, the Prius+ was also revealed, with seating for seven people.

HSD stands for Hybrid Synergy Drive. It's the fuel-saving technology used by Toyota that automatically switches between electric and petrol power, depending on the situation. HSD technology has featured on the Prius since the second generation.
The 1.8-litre petrol self-charging hybrid has proven popular amongst Prius drivers. Newer models can only be found with a plug-in option, limiting the choices for buyers, but making the used market more desirable.
The Active trim level has the lowest starting price as it's the base option for earlier generations. High-end trims, such as the T Spirit and Excel, have proven the most desirable among Prius drivers as they provide more technology and equipment.
Premium features can be found on some examples, such as leather seating, a 10-speaker sound system, voice recognition and satnav. Drivers should also look out for automatic windscreen wipers for added convenience or Wi-Fi to keep connected while on the road.
