Introduced into the Yaris family in 2021, the Toyota Yaris Cross is a compact SUV that shares a significant portion of its mechanics with the popular Toyota Yaris hatchback. This popularity has continued into the Yaris Cross, named the 2022 World Urban Car of the Year.
The Yaris Cross features a larger outer shell than the standard Yaris, and benefits from a spacious interior that competes against competitors within the small SUV segment.

Powering the Yaris Cross is a 1.5-litre petrol engine supported by a self-charging hybrid system. In total, the Yaris Cross produces 114 bhp, with the electric motors providing a nice wave of power during acceleration. Notably, the car can run on electric power alone at speeds of up to 80 mph, saving a lot of fuel in the process. The Yaris Cross has a high-up driving position, making it easy to get in and out of as well as improving visibility on the road. The rear seats comfortably fit two adults and accommodate a third, but it might be a tight squeeze. Thanks to the high roofline, rear passengers have plenty of headroom, but legroom can feel slightly tighter for taller adults.
Loading cargo into the car is made easy thanks to foldable read seats, which increase the space in the rear from the already decent 397-litre boot. Yes, the Yaris Cross can run on electric power alone for short distances, greatly improving fuel economy when travelling at lower speeds. It's capable of reaching an impressive 80 mph in EV mode, but this mode is more suited to in-town driving. The car will activate the petrol engine automatically as it needs to, either to provide more acceleration power or to charge the hybrid batteries.
While it depends on driving style and how much you can use the regenerative braking, the Yaris Cross will travel 559 miles on a full fuel tank on average. This is very competitive compared to its rivals like the Ford Puma, which does not have a full hybrid system (only mild hybrid) and only goes around 378 miles on a full tank.
Yes, the Yaris Cross is shorter in length than the C-HR but sits slightly higher off the ground. Furthermore, the C-HR has more cargo space than the Yaris Cross. However, the Yaris Cross is similar in size to its competitors, such as the Nissan Juke.
