In order to share the development costs between them, SEAT, Volkswagen and Ford worked on a people carrier design together. The larger headlights and 'smiling' grille gave it a distinctive look.
A 2000 update maintained the brand's image, but the roof had more of a curve toward the back where it met with a curved tailgate. The design was meant to be cutting-edge and it paired nicely with the body-coloured bumper extension and updated headlights.
Volkswagen and SEAT built the Alhambra with shared resources. The main difference between the Sharan and the SEAT Alhambra is the latter's sportier appearance. It featured wide angular headlights that made the front end look sharper. It was topped with 16 vertical slats on a broad black grille to provide a commanding presence.
With the start of the newest generation, SEAT only carried over a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel from the original configurations. Aside from that, the powertrains were all brand-new.
