The Fiat 500 supermini car won many hearts with its excellent agility, handling and fuel economy. The carmaker later introduced the Fiat 500L, a larger and more spacious car that falls in the mini-MPV segment. If you love to drink warm coffee by the roadside on a long journey, you'll appreciate that the Fiat 500L comes with an in-built espresso coffee machine. The Fiat 500L was initially made available in 4 different trims: the Fiat 500L Pop Star, Easy, Lounge and Trekking trims. In 2019, Fiat changed the names to City Cross, Cross and S-Design. Fiat also released a limited-edition 120th Anniversary trim to celebrate the carmaker's 120th birthday. The base-level 500L Pop Star didn't have air conditioning but had central locks, electric front windows, Bluetooth and a touchscreen-operated radio. The limited-edition 120th Anniversary trim came with 16-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system, as well as a black and white tuxedo paint scheme. If you go for the pre-2019 Fiat 500L Trekking trim version, you'll get a thumping Beats by Dre stereo system. The edition is also known as the Beats Edition. The BeatsAudio stereo system now comes available as an optional upgrade, as does an automatic braking system package. The latter comes with windscreen wipers and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Like the Fiat 500 supermini, the 500L is an excellent ride for in-city driving. It has a high driving position that gives the driver increased visibility. The steering is also easy and calm, plus the well-contained body roll makes changing directions easy. Though it's less enthusiastic than its supermini brother, an exciting driving experience is rarely a top priority when buying a mini-MPV.
The Fiat 500L comes with a range of engine options. For petrol options, Fiat offers a 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo and a 0.9-litre 2-cylinder Straight-TwinAir engine. For diesel you can choose from a 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre MultiJet motor. The 1.6-litre diesel engine is the only option that comes with a manual gearbox. After a 2019 facelift, Fiat dropped the TwinAir 2-cylinder option from the range.
If you need power, the larger motors are the best. However, since many people buy the Fiat 500L for economic reasons, they might not be the best choice for efficiency. The 1.3-litre diesel unit easily wins the efficiency contest, returning up to 70 mpg, while the 1.6-litre still offers an impressive 62 mpg. The 0.9-litre TwinAir is the most economical between the two petrol options. Not only does it provide a decent fuel economy of 58 mpg, but it is the only petrol unit that comes with stop/start technology. The CO2 emissions range from 110-117 g/km for the diesel units and 112-145 g/km for the petrol engines.
As the first standard production car to have a real espresso coffee machine, there was an uproar regarding its safety on board. The fears quickly calmed down after consumers realised the device only worked when the car is not moving. While driving, it remains tucked away in its dock.
You get a 400-litre boot space on the 500L, which is more than what you get on larger cars, such as the Volkswagen Golf. The rear seats easily slide forward and fold flat, leaving an impressive 1,310 litres of space. Folding the front passenger seat creates room for loads up to 2.4 metres long.
The mini-MPV earned the maximum 5-star safety score in NCAP crash-test ratings, showing that it's a safe car to ride. The safety kit on the 500L includes 6 airbags and a hill-hold system. It also has a brake control low-speed collision monitoring system, which is invaluable when driving in the city.
