If you're in the market for a family vehicle that can hold seven people, then a used Volkswagen Sharan is a great choice. The spacious cabin is well-equipped for comfortable, long drives and it is reasonably economical for its size. With the renowned build quality of Volkswagen behind it, the Sharan is an MPV that's going to provide many years of dependable family transportation.
At the end of its production, the VW Sharan was available with one petrol and two diesel engine options. On the used market, you'll find engines paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or dual-clutch automatic.

Interior spaceVW launched the Sharan in 1996 as one of the original MPVs, in partnership with SEAT and Ford. The first generation ran through to 2010, when the new Sharan was unveiled. Even though VW kept the Sharan updated and relevant, it was discontinued after 2022 as more drivers shifted toward SUVs. Yet these seven-seat models were consistently upgraded throughout the years, ensuring that they still provide practical motoring for today's families.
Volkswagen partnered with Ford to build the Sharan MPV for the 1996 model year. Because of this joint venture, the SEAT Alhambra and Ford Galaxy were similarly styled to the Sharan. It had a sloped front end and a raked windshield with narrow headlights. It could be equipped with five or seven seats.
A refresh took place in 2000 with more angular headlights and a steeper bonnet design. The taillights were also redesigned for an updated exterior look. Inside the cabin, the dashboard resembled that of the fifth-generation Passat, and it could now be configured with six or seven seats.
The second-generation Sharan was introduced in 2010 after the huge success of the first-generation’s 15-year production run. This generation shared its mechanical bits with the Passat saloon, offering improved driving dynamics over the previous version. Design updates included a sharper style with angular headlights and clearer body lines.
The interior featured a 2-3-2 layout, allowing adults to fit in the third row with ease. Passat-inspired technology also made its way into the cabin with large dials and a TFT display.

With up to seven seats and large boot space, the Sharan is a perfect car for all the family. Suitable for both long and short journeys, the Sharan is well prepared for economical and comfortable family travel.
City drivers tend to prefer the petrol engines, which are quieter during start and stop situations. Motorway commuters may prefer the diesel units, which are more economical in motorway and out-of-town driving.
Two popular trim levels are the SE Nav and SEL. The SE Nav is filled with a good amount of standard features for a lower price, but the SEL has more high-end touches that give it a premium feel.
For better styling, look out for models that include customised options such as the larger 17-inch alloy wheels, Alcantara leather seating, a panoramic sunroof and front fog lamps. When driving in colder weather, the heated windscreen and heated front seats may be preferable.
Discontinued in 2022, the Volkswagen Sharan never had a hybrid powertrain installed. At the end of production, it was offered with both petrol and diesel motor options.
Over the years, the Volkswagen Sharan came standard with a manual transmission. Yet there are models with an automatic installed, including the reliable 7-speed DSG (direct shift gear) automatic that provides better gear changes.
