Engines and transmissions

The Audi A5 has been available with both petrol and diesel engines, as well as manual or automatic gearboxes, with front or four-wheel drive.

Petrol

S-Line 35 TFSI produces 147bhp with a 2.0-litre engine, creating a 0-60mph time of 8.8 seconds with a rating ranging between 39mpg and 42.2mpg.
Upgraded Black Edition 40 TFSI increases output to 201bhp, offers a 0-60mph time to 7 seconds and and provides a similar efficiency of around 40mpg.
Black Edition 45 TFSI creates 261bhp for a 5.4-second 0-60mph time, but efficiency drops to 36.2mpg.
Most powerful petrol engine is the RS5 TSI 2.9-litre which outputs 443bhp for a 3.8-second 0-60mph start.

Diesel

S-Line TDI 2.0-litre engine provides 147bhp with a 47.9mpg rating.
Edition 1 35 TDI outputs 160bhp, hitting 60mph in 8.1 seconds and offering an efficiency of up to 53.3mpg.
40 TDI creates 201bhp and hits 62mph in 6.9 seconds with a rating of 50.4mpg.
S5 TDI 3.0-litre is the most powerful diesel engine with an output of 342bhp and a 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds.

Practicality

Both the coupé and Sportback offer a practical use of space, with ample room for adults to be comfortable.

Interior space

Adjustable driver's seat may also include lumbar support.
Outer rear seats suited for adults, with similar headroom to the BMW 4 Series.
ISOFIX mounting points found under plastic covers for child seats.

Boot space

455-litre boot is larger than the Mercedes C-Class Coupe and BMW 4 Series.
Folding the rear seats creates a 980-litre boot.
Sportback is larger with 480 litres and 1,300 litres when the back seats are down.

Different generations of used Audi A5

First released in 2007, the Audi A5 was based on the A4, with added comfort and refinement. The luxury coupé quickly became popular in the UK, causing Audi to manufacture a five-door Sportback version just two years later, as well as a convertible variant known as the A5 Cabriolet. Now in its second generation (introduced in 2016), the A5 is more popular as a used car than ever, with upgraded tech features and new engine options.

Second Generation (2016 to 2025)

Building on the success of the first generation, Audi sought to give the A5 lineup a more premium and aggressive look. New features were added, including an available premium 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. The A5 Sportback started to look a little more like its larger sibling, the A7, even though most of the interior still matched with the A4.

A refresh in 2019 upgraded the powertrains, appearance and multimedia system. New engines were compliant with the stricter Euro 6d emissions standards, while the styling added a new honeycomb mesh grille to the front, replacing the previous slatted model. Side sills were also added to increase stability.

First Generation (2007 to 2025)

The original A5 was based on the A4, as well as a 2003 concept car known as the Audi Nuvolari Quattro. The first-generation luxury coupé came with powerful engine options, and is mostly known for its refined cabin and sleek exterior design.

A 2011 refresh included a mild facelift to make the lineup sportier and more modern. New headlights were added and redesigned taillights became available with LED strips. Five-door Sportback models had sharper headlights and redesigned LED daytime running lights. The grille design was also extended, adding a recognisable, sharp appearance to the front fascia.
