Audi History

Audi was established in 1910, after the founder, August Horch, fell out with the man in charge of his former company’s finances. The name is a Latin word meaning ‘hear’ – a meaning it shares with the German word ‘horch’.

Audi’s first car – the Type A – was built later that year, closely followed by the Type B.

It wasn’t until 1928 that the four rings started to appear on Audi’s vehicles. The company merged with Horch’s old company and two others to form Auto Union. The union’s racers all wore the four-ring logo, but they fell under separate brands.

Today, Audi is also part of a group of manufacturers – the Volkswagen Group – which incorporates Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche, as well as truck manufacturer MAN and motorcycle maker Ducati.

The company has a famous motorsport heritage, with the four-wheel-drive Quattro blowing away the competition in rally events and, more recently, great success at the annual Le Mans endurance race.

Owning an Audi

Audi has an excellent reputation for build quality, but it is also synonymous with style and technology.

The brand boasts a large network of well-regarded dealers, and some of the larger showrooms offer extra facilities such as a spa or a gym.

By and large, Audis don’t depreciate steeply, with used values staying strong for years after the car is first registered. This is partly down to the cars’ desirability and perceived quality, which keeps the market for used examples buoyant.

Audi Range Overview

Audi has one of the largest ranges of any car manufacturer in the UK, building everything from tiny superminis and sports cars to huge SUVs and luxury saloons.

The most popular models include the A3, which is a family hatchback based on the Volkswagen Golf, and the A4, which is a compact executive saloon sharing much with the Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Superb.

The smallest car in the range – the A1 – is also hugely popular thanks to its premium cabin and strong image. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Audi builds the Q3, Q5 and Q7 SUVs.

Audi’s performance cars have become revered over the years, and the current crop includes the 362bhp RS 3 hatchback and the outrageous 597bhp RS 6 estate. The sportiest models, however, are the TT coupe and the V10-engined R8, both of which are also available as convertibles.
