Mazda has earned a reputation for building high-quality SUVs, starting with the CX-5 in 2012. After the success of that model, Mazda decided that it was time to launch the first compact crossover in 2015 – the CX-3. This smaller model was set to compete against the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke, but it didn't make it out of the first generation.
