Jaguar history

Jaguar originated as S.S. Cars Limited, a company which emerged from the Swallow Sidecar Company. The first time the Jaguar name appeared on a car was on a 2.5-litre saloon car in 1935.

Towards the end of World War Two, the Jaguar name was adopted. The brand became famous for its exploits on both the road and the racetrack, with iconic cars such as the XK120, D-Type and E-Type.

Jaguar was bought by Ford in the 1990s, along with Land Rover. In 2008, both marques were sold to Tata Motors for £1.7 billion.

Owning a Jaguar

Jaguar’s history is deeply rooted in both luxury and performance. The brand has an air of quality and sophistication to it, while remaining understated.

While the 2016 Driver Power survey saw Land Rover as the third least reliable manufacturer, its sister company Jaguar ranked well above it. Although the classic British pedigree has always been associated with poor build quality, Jaguar has risen above this to rival its German opponents for durability.

Jaguar range overview

The baby of Jaguar’s range is the XE – a saloon car that, while not being cheap, won’t break the bank. Priced slightly above this is the XF, after which we have the marque’s most premium saloon car, the XJ.

Jaguar does not currently make any estates. However, if you require more space than is offered by a saloon car, the F-Pace is the brand’s first-ever SUV.

Those seeking a piece of that famous British sporting pedigree should go for the F-Type, which is also available as a spicy R configuration or an outrageously powerful SVR version.
