Toyota history

Sakichi Toyoda founded Toyota in the 1920s as a company to sell an automatic loom.

After his design was sold to a British company, the company started making cars. Automobile production began in 1933 under Kiichiro Toyoda, the founder’s son. In 1937, Toyota Motor Company became an independent carmaker.

Over the decades, Toyota became well known for building practical, reliable vehicles.

Owning a Toyota

Toyota is one of the world’s most reliable car manufacturers. In 2016, it came second in the global reliability rankings, losing out only to Lexus – its own luxury vehicle division.

The Japanese marque generally produces solid, reliable vehicles in an uncomplicated package.  However, it has been known to make sports cars as well as more everyday models.

In recent years, Toyota has been a keen supporter of alternative fuel sources. Many of its models are available as hybrids and it is investing in hydrogen infrastructure.

Toyota range overview

Toyota currently makes three hatchbacks – the Aygo, Yaris and Auris. If you need a bit more space, there are medium-sized options in the forms of the Avensis, Prius and Auris Touring Sport.

The carmaker has a huge choice for customers in need of more space. There’s the C-HR, RAV4 and Land Cruiser SUVs and the Prius+, Verso and Proace Verso.

The Hilux pickup truck could be used for domestic or commercial use, while the Proace van is more suited to use in a professional trade.

Toyota also offers the Mirai – a medium-sized saloon car that runs on hydrogen, a new fuel source with a fairly undeveloped infrastructure.
