Honda history

Soichiro Honda was a mechanic who had a keen interest in automobiles. He started a company to manufacture piston rings, but it failed after Toyota – his main customer – wasn’t happy with the quality.

The Second World War naturally brought a variety of problems, after which Honda started building motorcycles – by 1964, it was the world’s largest manufacturer of them.

In 1963, Honda started selling its first automobile – the T360 pickup truck. This was quickly followed by the S500 sports car, and from there onwards, Honda earned a good reputation for building passenger vehicles.

Owning a Honda

Honda is one of the world’s top 10 carmakers, and it has built a fantastic reputation for building durable cars. In fact, ownership surveys show it to be the fifth most reliable manufacturer in the market.

While Honda is mainly known for building reliable, practical cars, it has made some successful sports cars too, such as the NSX.

One of Honda’s key traits is its innovation in new engine technologies. Its association with the McLaren Formula 1 team has allowed it to develop new ideas to be used in road cars.

Honda range overview

Honda currently makes two hatchbacks – the Jazz, a small city car, and the Civic, the company’s standard-bearer.

Those needing more space may be more suited to the larger Civic Tourer, or the HR-V and CR-V SUVs.

Honda is still continuing its tradition of building sporty cars alongside its practical models. The Civic Type R is its entry into the hot hatch market, while the hybrid NSX is a Ferrari-rivalling supercar.

In addition to building cars, Honda is still one of the world’s largest motorcycle companies. It also makes ATVs, marine engines, lawnmowers, industrial equipment and snowthrowers, to name just a few!
