Škoda history

Originating as a bike company called Laurin and Klement, Škoda started making cars in the 1920s. Its cars were a quick success in the Czech market and by 1936 it was a market leader.

The occupation of Czechoslovakia during World War Two resulted in Škoda’s factory being bombed. The majority of the 20th century after this saw further problems because of communist economic policies.

In 1991, after the Velvet Revolution, Škoda became part of Volkswagen Group. This completely changed the perception of the brand in western civilisation. What were once considered laughably bad communist cars became affordable and practical vehicles.

Owning a Škoda

According to the 2016 Driver Power survey, Škoda is the eighth most reliable brand of car in the world.

Škoda builds practical, reliable, affordable cars for everyday use. Like Volkswagen, the brand is now known as being a good quality brand of vehicle. Škoda was affected by the Dieselgate scandal, but this has been resolved.

Škoda range overview

Škoda’s range starts with the Citigo city car. There is also a larger hatchback – the Fabia.

Saloons come in the forms of the Rapid – which is also available as an estate – the Octavia – which is also available in a sportier vRS configuration – and the Superb.

For those who need more space, there are the Yeti and Kodiaq crossover SUVs.
