Engines and transmissions

The Mercedes-Benz GLE may have a variety of engine options (petrol, diesel and hybrid), but they all include an automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive.

Petrol

GLE 450 has a 3.0-litre engine producing 375bhp for a 5.4-second 0-60mph time.
AMG GLE 53 offers more output at 428bhp to hit 60mph in 4.8 seconds.
AMG GLE 63 has a 4.0-litre V8 that creates 603bhp, giving it a 0-60mph time of 3.7 seconds.
GLE 400 e plug-in hybrid creates a combined output of 375bhp and offers up to 66 miles of electric-only driving.

Diesel

GLE 300 d has a 2.0-litre engine creating 241bhp and returns a rating of around 39mpg.
GLE 350 d and GLE 400 d use 3.0-litre six-cylinders to output 268bhp and 325bhp. Average fuel economy is around 33mpg for these engines.
Newer GLE 450 d outputs 361bhp for a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds. Despite being quicker than all other diesels, average fuel economy is a respectable 34.5mpg.
GLE 350 de plug-in hybrid uses a 2.0-litre diesel engine with an electric motor to make 315bhp, while the large battery allows for up to 66 miles of electric-only driving.

Practicality

With the ability to hold a larger family, the GLE is extremely practical and comes equipped with numerous high-tech features.

Interior space

Can be configured with two or three rows of seating, to hold five or seven people (hybrid only holds five).
Third row is better suited for children and not suited for taller adults.
Wide-opening doors and ISOFIX points make fitting child seats easier.

Boot space

With five seats in place, there's 630 litres of boot space (490 litres with plug-in hybrid).
Folding the middle row creates 2,055 litres of space, which is more than most competitors.

Bodystyles

GLE is a five- or seven-passenger SUV that has been in production since 2015.
GLE Coupé has a sportier style and was released in 2020.

Safety

2019 Euro NCAP rating is five stars.
91% rating given to adult occupant, with 90% for child occupant.
Standard kit includes airbags, blind spot monitoring, driver drowsiness system and a dashcam.

Dual-screen infotainment system uses MBUX technology.

Different generations of used Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

When it was released in 2015, the Mercedes-Benz GLE replaced the previously available M-Class during its third generation. Currently in its second generation, the GLE continues to provide families with high-end luxury in an SUV package. Mercedes-Benz has issued several facelifts and updates to ensure that the GLE-Class fits well in the lineup.

Second Generation (2019 to 2019)

The second-generation GLE was completely redone from the ground up, the first full redesign since it received its new name. It featured the latest Mercedes-Benz styling to fit in better with the rest of the lineup. With its release, the GLE had LED daytime running lights shaped like two arrows within the headlights, a grille with satin-chrome slats and the company badge. A GLE Coupé model was also released in 2020 with a sleeker, sloped roof.

A 2023 facelift offers high-performance LED headlights with blocks for the daytime running lights and multibeam LED tech. Inside the cabin, two wider screens were also installed, sharing the same piece of glass.

First Generation (2015 to 2019)

As a facelift to the third-generation M-Class, the GLE received its updated name. Its revised styling included a new grille, headlights, bumpers and hood. LED daytime running lights were integrated into the headlights and the LED headlights were enhanced.

Several engine options were included with the first lineup, along with many updated technology features. Not only did Mercedes include a 7.0-inch media display, but new safety features were also installed, such as collision prevention assist plus and crosswind assist.
