Mercedes-Benz history

In 1886, Karl Benz created the Benz Patent Motorwagen – the first petrol-powered car. With the help of Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, he put it on sale in 1901 as the Mercedes automobile.

Following the creation of the Daimler-Benz company, the first Mercedes-Benz-branded cars began production in 1926.

Over the course of the 20th century, Mercedes-Benz invented many new technical and safety features that became customary in all cars. Today, it is a very well-established luxury carmaker.

Owning a Mercedes-Benz

Since its creation, Mercedes-Benz has had a reputation for quality and reliability.

There was a slight blip from the late 1990s to early 2000s where production quality slipped somewhat, but it was only temporary.

Mercedes-Benz’s durability has risen in recent years, though. In 2014, Reuters found that it had the lowest vehicle recall rate for any car company.

The result is that any Mercedes-Benz you buy today will likely be a well-crafted vehicle that is more luxurious than many of its rivals.

Mercedes-Benz range overview

Mercedes-Benz caters for the needs of motorists who want a vehicle that feels a bit more premium than average. As long as you’re not on a small budget, there’ll be something for you.

If you’re after a high-quality hatchback, the A-Class could suit you perfectly. Of course, Mercedes-Benz specialises in its range of luxury saloons and estates, which include the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, CLA and CLS shooting brakes.

Buyers after a bit more space have a range of SUVs to choose from in the format of the GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS and G-Class. There are also the V-Class and B-Class people carriers, the latter of which can be purchased as an electric model.

Many of the aforementioned cars are also available in coupé and cabriolet versions. Those who want to enjoy top-down motoring may choose either the SL or SLC roadsters. Finally, there are the AMG GT, AMG GT S and AMG GT R supercars.
