Renault history

Renault was founded by three brothers in 1899. Louis was in charge of engineering, while Marcel and Fernand were the businessmen. The first car built by the company was the 1CV, which was sold to a family friend.

The company started producing its own engines in 1903. Two years later, Société des Automobiles de Place purchased a large volume of Renault AG1 cars in order to build a fleet of taxis, which were used as troop transports during the First World War.

Following all this were years of increasingly successful sales, with the brand becoming more and more famous on both the road and the racetrack.

Owning a Renault

Today, Renault is one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, making affordable, practical cars for everyday use.

While most of its range is conventionally powered, Renault does build some fully electric cars, meaning buyers can choose whatever suits them.

Renault range overview

The cheapest car in Renault’s range is the Twizy – a two-seater electric quadricycle. The other EV available is the Zoe hatchback.

The Twingo city car starts off the conventionally powered range, along with the Clio – a supermini – and the Megane – a larger hatchback, which is also available as an estate

Crossover SUVs exist in the forms of the Captur, Kadjar and Koleos. Offering even more space than these are the Scenic and Grand Scenic people carriers.

For those who are after a bit more pace, the Renault Sport division offers beefed up versions of the Twingo, Clio and Megane.

Commercial needs are catered to by a selection of vans – the Kangoo, Trafic and Master.
