Seat history

Seat (Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo) was founded in 1950 in order to make cars more available in Spain. When the first plant was set up in 1953, production output was five cars per day.

Seat became increasingly successful with popular cars like the 600 and a partnership with Fiat. In 1974, the company produced its two millionth car, meaning it was now ranked eighth among European carmakers in terms of sales.

In 1986, Volkswagen purchased 51 per cent of Seat’s shares. By the end of the year, they had bought a total of 75 per cent of the business. Today, Seat is a full subsidiary of VW Group.

Owning a Seat

Since being part of Volkswagen Group, Seat has built good quality cars, mainly based off VW platforms.

In 2016, the Telegraph ranked the brand as the eighth best manufacturer in terms of reliability.

Seat range overview

The smallest vehicle in the Seat range is the Mii city car. It’s one of three hatchbacks, the other two being the Ibiza and the Leon. The latter of these is also available as an estate.

Seat offers just one saloon car – the Toledo. The marque does also sell vehicles with more space than this – there’s the Ateca SUV and the Alhambra MPV.

If it’s a hot hatch you’re after, both the Ibiza and Leon are available in a fiery Cupra configuration.
