If you're in the market for a practical and budget-friendly small car, then a used Kia Picanto is a great choice. The Picanto has won a number of awards and delivers a stellar performance in urban environments. It features lots of standard equipment without costing any more than is necessary, making it a top contender for anyone trying to save money.
Today's Picanto only comes with one petrol engine option, though used models have more variety. It pairs with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Picanto has never been available with a diesel engine in the UK.

Interior spaceSince the very first model in 2004, Kia has supplied a Picanto that balances value and practicality. Through three generations, every update and refresh has brought newer technologies and better efficiency, with a focus on comfort and style. The top-spec trims allow drivers to experience more luxury and gadgets without losing any of the practicality or value for money.
Kia revealed the third-generation Picanto in 2017. Sharing the platform with the Hyundai i10, Picanto models came with a slightly longer wheelbase. This extended wheelbase led to more interior space, most notably in the back seat.
A design refresh took place in 2020, with the front bumper earning an update that improved the appearance. The interior received some upgrades that helped the 8-inch infotainment system and 4.2-inch digital display stand out. In 2023, the Picanto received a second refresh that included more technology, such as a digital instrument cluster. Kia also revealed a new design, with the LED light strip moving from one end to the other, connecting the headlights together.

The Picanto was available as either a three- or five-door hatchback. The smaller version was deemed more desirable for those who don't require a back seat or easy access to the rear. It was an instant success for delivery companies, which enjoyed the fuel efficiency and modern style.
A 2015 facelift helped the vehicle comply with the Euro 6 emissions regulations. Both bodystyles also earned new technology to keep it up to date.

An anti-theft alarm system and engine immobiliser come as standard. Rear child door locks are also available.
There's one engine option with the new Picanto, and it's among the most efficient that it has ever had. The 1.0-litre motor puts out 66bhp and is capable of up to 55.4 mpg, making it perfect for getting around the city without spending a lot on petrol.
This is an area where the Kia Picanto scores very well. All generations of the car have inexpensive insurance, and the 2017 model is down in insurance group 5. That makes it an attractive buy if you're on a tight budget, as well as making it a realistic option for younger drivers.
The Picanto comes in five trim levels: 1, 2, 3, X-Line S and GT-Line. As a base model, the 1 offers drivers a more economical option, but it doesn't have many features. Top-tier models have more technology and comfort equipment, but the price is raised accordingly.
Even as a budget-friendly vehicle, high-tech features are available. Look out for models with options such as a satellite navigation system, a wireless phone charger and parking sensors. Comfort features are also available, such as heated front seats.
The Picanto is best reserved for younger families with small children, as taller people will find it a bit cramped in the back seats. If you are travelling with smaller children, the back seat may provide enough space, and there are ISOFIX points for hooking up car seats.
Kia doesn't have a hybrid variant of the Picanto yet, but one may arrive in the future. It's still an economical car with its 1.0-litre petrol engine that earns a combined 55.4 mpg.
While the Kia Picanto does have the option to include a six-speed manual transmission, there's also an available five-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Both of these pair to the 1.0-litre petrol engine.
