Engines and transmissions

Over the years, BMW has offered the 6 Series with a diesel or petrol engine, an automatic or a manual transmission, and rear or four-wheel drive.

Petrol

640i has a 3.0-litre engine that generates 320bhp and offers a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds and a 36mpg rating.
650i increases the output to 407bhp because of the 4.4-litre V8 engine that reduces the 0-62mph time to 4.5 seconds and offers a rating between 26mpg and 32mpg.
650i Sport offers the highest petrol power at 442bhp with a 32mpg fuel efficiency rating.

Diesel

640d outputs 313bhp from the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 5.5 seconds with a fuel rating of around 50mpg.
Diesel models have the best efficiency rating, of up to 51.4mpg.

Practicality

Each 6 Series model has a practical aspect to it, with the Gran Turismo offering the most space and enhanced comfort.

Interior space

Front passengers have plenty of leg and headroom in any bodystyle.
Gran Turismo models have more rear passenger room, with other bodystyles better suited for children.
Leather upholstery comes standard with newer models.
Rear ISOFIX points secure child seats and are easy to reach in four-door models.

Boot space

Gran Coupé contains 460 litres of boot space.
Convertible has a reduced boot space of 250 litres, or 200 litres with the roof down.
Gran Turismo has the most spacious boot (610 litres), but there are up to 1,800 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Wide tailgate makes it easier to load cargo.

Bodystyles

Two-door coupé has the sportiest appearance, but there is less back seat room.
Two-door convertible allows for open-air driving.
Four-door Gran Turismo increases the rear passenger comfort.

2017 Euro NCAP rating for the GT was a perfect five stars.
86% rating given to adult occupant, 85% for child occupant and 81% for pedestrian.

Different generations of used BMW 6 Series

The very first 6 Series arrived in 1976, known as the BMW E24. At the time, it was the fastest four-seater coupé available. BMW had released four generations of the 6 Series, all with varying bodystyles and powertain options. With each new generation and refresh, BMW included more technology and comfort features, adding to the desirability. However, the 6 Series lineup was discontinued in 2020, replaced by the 8 Series.

Fourth Generation (2017 to 2020)

With the discontinuation of other bodystyles, only the 6 Series Gran Turismo continued into the fourth generation. This agile sports car was lightweight because of the high-strength steel and aluminium construction. A rear axle air suspension and optional adaptive suspension added to the comfort of the cabin.

The 6 Series Gran Turismo is known for its coupé-like profile with the sloping roof. It offers a sports-car feel combined with elegance, while there is a spacious and luxurious cabin.

Third Generation (2011 to 2018)

From an exterior viewpoint, the 6 Series had clearly defined lines and a flat, broad silhouette. The free-standing Control Display found in the cabin added to the premium, high-class feel. There was also a convertible model available with a fabric roof for even more on-road enjoyment. In 2012, the 6 Series Gran Coupe was released, giving the lineup a larger option for added comfort.

A 2015 facelift gave the lineup new kidney grilles on the front and updated rear aprons that emphasised the width of the car. There were also new paint finishes, LED headlights and a Hi-Fi stereo available from 2017.
